The Black Beetle Issa Ibrahim 2012 music CD- Limited Edition, limited quantities collector’s item UPC 888174229232
“ONE OF THEM” started off as a poem written in 1994, before I had acquired a guitar or even knew how to play properly. However, the words slid easily into a simple chord pattern. Whatever magic it may possess happened during the recording, where I found a propulsive, building shuffle to give the song dramatic impact.
“SLEEP WELL” The title phrase came straight from the mouth of my treating psychiatrist…and I was so mortified I immediately retreated to my bedroom, picked up my guitar and wrote this song.
“THE KILLER WITHIN” tries hard to suggest the antagonist only sees the singer through the filter of the crime that brought him to them, and that was largely true, but there’s something a bit disquieting about the lyrics that make the song not entirely clear if the singer is decrying a broken system or reveling in his disreputable notoriety. I certainly didn’t intend that, and as a pure pop song I think it’s successful, but the dark subject matter and ambiguous message makes it catchy and creepy, a hallmark of my work.
“HURT AND DESPERATE” was written in the 1995 when I was deep in the dung, wallowing in the belly of the psychiatric beast. This song was inspired by the 60’s chestnut “Bobby’s Girl” by Marcie Blane and Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole” though it sounds nothing like either. Being an inpatient in Creedmoor hospital provided a great deal of inspired grist for a young songwriter to chew on. Pretty proud of that outro.
Recorded in a halfway house on the grounds of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.
12 songs written, performed and produced by Issa Ibrahim. Limited quantities.
